SOMA welcomes Victor Grasso back for his eighth solo show. In this new body of paintings and drawings Grasso continues to explore subjects that intrigue him such as the sea, sea life, and the female form. “The Naturalist” is a reference to the study of nature, fieldwork, the urge to collect, and the exploration of bold untouched territory. Grasso has embraced a classical approach in his process; painting with a free hand, studying from life, and working from charcoal renderings that enable him to better understand his subjects. The paintings are rendered completely in oil with no drawing or architecture underneath
"Over the course of the last year I have been driven to further explore man’s relationship to wildlife, and his desire to collect what nature leaves behind. In this new body of work I have combined the female form, the vessel from which all life is created, with vestiges from the wilderness. With haunting storytelling and portraiture, I express the raw beauty of women intertwined with the natural world."
“The Naturalist” becomes a study in the human connection with nature. By broadening the appeal of figurative realism, the alluring women adorned with quirky curiosities and other bits of nature exude the dramatic force of the natural world. Whether adorning a shell on a head, (The Whelk), reaping a harvest before a storm (The Owl and The Scythe), or seducing the viewer post hunt (The Pheasant Hunt), the commanding peculiarity of this natural world is both captured and preserved.
